For many years I have been told I have IBS. More recently bile acid malabsorption has been suggested. Practically, in my opinion, it is “idiopathic” i.e. they don’t have any idea.
At the age of about early 50’s all of a sudden I could not eat apples without an immediate (within 10 minutes) run for the bathroom. Apples were followed in short order by lettuce, strawberries and MSG and probably spicy foods.
For over 50 years none of these were a problem in the slightest — all of a sudden, panic mode.
I am now 78 and have not solved any problems with these foods and from similar reaction a number of other foods. A person could easily become a hermit — close to a bathroom.
Another thing I have centered in on are enzymes ending in “ase”. Lipase, amylase, and xylanase are dynamite and hard to determine where and when they might be. We have a food business called Tim Horton’s — a casual food type restaurant. 90% of their menu items contain these enzymes. I could not figure out why I had bowel problems every time I ate there. One day I bought a in-store bakery loaf of bread at our local grocer Save-On Foods. After eating a few slices of the bread I had the run to the bathroom experience. This caused me to check the ingredient list and compare it to a regular large bakery bread (Dempsters). The only difference was that the in-store bakery bread contained amylase and xylanase. Needless to say I no longer frequent Tim’s and no longer purchase in-store bakery bread.
I have a better control of the diarrhea episodes by taking a drug called Lodallis (Colesevelam) coupled with intermittent use of immodium but I still get these surprise episodes caused by ‘I have no idea’.
One thing that is now my biggest problem and for which my doctor and a gastroenterologist just shrugged their shoulders and said “I have no idea” — that problem is a situation where after a bowel movement it takes me 4 – 6 hours of nausea and weakness to recover to normal i.e. a long time which prohibits any kind of social activity after a visit to the bathroom — that can ruin a lot of days and activities. And the medical people just say “I have no idea.”That’s the main points of my story.
